(8/2/2008) Visitors to Bali in mid-August will have the chance to celebrate Indonesia's Independence day (August 17th) during a three-day street festival - Kuta Sidewalk Festival August 16-18, 2008.

Kemang festival unleashes green spirit

The annual Kemang Festival will kick off Saturday with various attractions and stalls to charm Jakartans.

The festival's project leader, Deasy Sugiharti, said this year's event would feature campaigns from Jakarta's green communities, such as Bike to Work, Caring Community and Gerombolan Peduli Sampah (Trash Care Community).

"This year's theme is Hijau Kemangku (My Green Kemang). For example, the Bike to Work community will promote the importance of biking to work to reduce air pollution," Deasy said.

The two-day festival will take place along a one-kilometer stretch of Kemang Raya, South Jakarta, which will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until the festival ends,

The festival will be open Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m

Indonesia June tourist arrivals up 4 percent from May

The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia rose 4 percent to 529,100 in June from May, and was up 6.2 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics released on Friday.

In the six months to June, 2.9 million foreign tourists visited the country, compared with 2.6 million a year earlier .

Resort island Bali remained the biggest entry point for visitors, with 967,263 tourists arriving via its Ngurah Rai airport during the six-month period, up 23.8 percent.

In full-year 2007, 5.51 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia, up from 4.87 million in 2006.

Tourist spending totaled $5.3 billion for the entire year, an increase of 20.5 percent from $4.4 billion the year before.
