Bali`s hotel room occupancy rate down 1.13 pct in May

Star-rated hotels in Bali saw their average room occupancy rate fall 1.13 percent to 62.90 percent in May from 64.03 percent in April.

"The room occupancy rate is closely related to the number of foreign and domestic tourists visiting Bali," Head of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office I Gede Suarsa said here on Sunday.

More than 1.05 million tourists visited Bali in the first five months of 2011, up 6.61 percent from 992,335 in the same period last year, he said.

In May alone, 209,058 tourists visited the resort island, up 2.79 percent compared to the same month last year. But it fell 6.96 percent from April 2011.

Gede Suarsa said Denpasar took the lead in terms of hotel room occupancy rate with 65.31 percent, followed by Gianyar 56.87 percent, Karangasem 49.49 percent, Tabanan 41.11 percent and Buleleng 25.12 percent. The other three districts, Jembrana, Bangli and Klungkung do not have star-rated hotels.

He said foreign tourists` length of stay at star-rated hotels averaged 3.27 days, longer than that of domestic tourists which reached 2.86 days.

Four-star hotels recorded the highest room occupancy rate of 64.94 percent, followed by two-star hotels 63 percent, five-star hotels 62.49 percent, three-star hotels 62.29 percent, and one-star hotels 60.26 percent.

Non-star hotels meanwhile had an average room occupancy rate of 32.53 percent, with the highest room occupancy rate of 55.94 percent recorded in Badung, followed by Jembrana 29.84 percent,Tabanan 26.80 percent, Gianyar 30.50 percent, Klungkung 44.37 percent, Bangli 17.99 percent, Karangasem 17.66 percent, Buleleng 23.44 percent and Denpasar 32.99 percent.
