'Illegal' sale of paradise islands off Lombok probed

Indonesia is to investigate the illegal sale of 13 islands in the latest of a series of corruption scandals in one of Asia's most popular tourist destinations, officials said Thursday.

The National Land Agency (BPN) has been accused of giving ownership papers for the islets off Lombok island, near Bali, to a number of individuals and companies, West Lombok administration spokesman Ispan Junaidi told AFP.

Junaedi said the islets -- diving and snorkelling hotspots with huge coral reefs teeming with marine wildlife -- include Gili Renggit, Gili Tangkong and Gili Nanggu, which is dotted with pristine beaches and is known locally as the "Paradise Island".

West Lombok BPN chief Udin Syafrudin denied that his office had issued the ownership certificates.

"We've never issued that kind of papers. Some may make investment on the islands by building resorts, but not owning the land, and this is not against the law," he said.

An official from the provincial prosecutor's office who didn't want to be named said the islands covered almost 150 hectares (370.6 acres), adding that foreign companies claimed ownership of 16 hectares on Gili Tangkong and Gili Renggit.

Indonesia scored 2.8 out of 10 in Transparency International's annual Corruption Perceptions Index for 2010, ranking it 110th out of 178 countries.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has won two elections on a graft-fighting platform but few people now believe he has what it takes to tackle the nefarious forces that control the country's judiciary.

A recent report by the Indonesian Survey Institute showed the public's perception of the war on corruption was nose-diving.

Printemps Francais, Feast for Francophiles

Francophiles in Jakarta always eagerly anticipate the Printemps Francais, an annual festival celebrating French culture. This year, the festival’s special focus on music should really give lovers of the Gallic nation something to sing about.

The 7th Printemps Francais festival, which runs from May to July, encompasses events at 12 venues throughout the capital, including art exhibitions, performances, cooking demos and, of course, concerts.

French ambassador Philippe Zeller said this year’s musical events would give the Indonesian public a chance to learn about the depth and variety of contemporary French music.

The ambassador gave a special mention to Sophia Charai, who will be performing on May 10 at Teater Salihara. Charai, a Moroccan who has lived in Paris since she was 17, is known as a jazz singer who combines Eastern and Western elements in her music. Her first studio album, “Pichu,” was released earlier this year.

Andrea Bocelli at the Jakarta Ritz

At last, a legend for the new millennium. A legend in the Homeric sense of a myth, the word that speaks which has flowered here through song: like Caruso, Gigli, Del Monaco, Corelli A legend (of Andrea Bocelli's stature) is not created by design: the most astute marketing would never be able to produce such a result. It is simply that people recognized him and voted for him. And so it happened, in an apparently equal context (a singing competition, the Sanremo festival in 1994) and yet a most perfect one, because the infancy of a legend follows a course which breaks with tradition.
From then on the tone of his voice has brought tenderness to the world and his fame has increased exponentially. Because if God would have a singing voice, He would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli even Celine Dion's famous comment is a clear, unadorned testament to the artist's legendary status as well as the perception of a gift That voice, that simultaneously melancholic and radiant colour, an unrivalled vocal interpretation of the emotions of a lover or a father, a matchless expression of earthly desire or heavenly love, with 70 million record sales to testify to it. Regalia – The Enchanted Forest

Colossal Stage Performance 'Regalia – The Enchanted Forest' Embarks on Six Month Engagement at the Bali Theatre. Premieres on Saturday, May 14, 2011.

(5/2/2011) Saturday, May 14, 2010 is the date for the premiere performance of Indonesia's first combined professional acrobatic and musical extravaganza theatrical performance at the Bali Theatre in the Taman Safari and Marine Park, located on the I.B. Mantra Highway on Denpasar's eastern outskirts.

The nearly 1.5 hour spectacular features a cast of more than 50 acrobats, performers, dancers, singers and actors including more than 20 former Cirque du Soleil performers.

Regalia – The Enchanted Forest

Presented on what is arguably one of the world's largest high-tech stages, Regalia – The Enchanted Forest is a romantic love story set in the mystical and magic forest of Regalia where, like in the island of Bali - a delicate balance is maintained between man, nature and the spiritual realm.

Directed by H. Peter Heckmann who, together with I Nyoman Sura and Sunny Soriano, scripted the spectacular, The Enchanted Forest promises to bedazzle and amaze with a quality of a music, dance, acrobatic feats and stagecraft formerly only available on stages in Las Vegas and other leading world capitals.

Among those appearing in the coming performance:

· Sunny Soriano - A Los Angeles-based aerialists who has shared stages with the Black-eyed Peas, Jason Mraz and Josh Groban. She has also performed on internationally televised presentation of The Grammy Awards.

Dancing professionally since the age of four, a move to Los Angeles introduced her to circus performance – a world she now dominates as one of its leading contemporary exponents.

She has toured and performed in various live stage shows and at some of the biggest festivals and events in the world, such as the Coachella Music Festival (US )and the Electric Picnic Festival (Ireland), as well as Cirque Du Soleil and National Academy of Recording Arts (Grammys) special events.

· Maximiliano Palacio – this exciting Argentinean performer makes his home in Los Angeles. A supreme athlete who excels in both Polo and Rugby, many will remember him in a supporting role on "Desperate Housewives."A successful New York model, Palacio is a also a gifted thespian at home in both comedic and Shakespearean roles.

It was while hosting his own hit show 12 Corozones with Penelope Menchaca that Maximiliano began acrobatic dance training with Soriano, a turn in his career he took with remarkable ease due to his innate athleticism.

· Orlando Bassi - engaged to design costumes and stage effects for the Bali show, his works have complemented a number of productions including: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, 10.000BC and Legend of the Seeker.

A Spectacle Like No Other

The international cast of fifty-two eclectic and awe-inspiring acrobatic performers, dancers, singers and musicians are certain to enchant Bali audiences during a powerful, action-packed seventy-five minute theatrical encounter.

The original musical score has been written by internationally renowned composers Joshua Penman and H.P. Heckmann and choreographed by the French master Jerome "Jay" Maurel and Balinese dancing legend I Nyoman Sura.

The Gala Première

The Enchanted Forest will be presented two or three times each week beginning in June, with tickets available for a gala première to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011.
