UN Tourism head urges more open borders

The U.N.'s top tourism official is urging Europe to open its borders wider instead of reimposing restrictions on who may enter.

Taleb D. Rifai, who heads the World Tourism Organization, says the EU's Schengen borderless zone already is "depriving itself of tremendous potential" through visa requirements for outsiders.

He says that any return to border controls within the zone is going to be "very, very damaging." Rifai spoke Tuesday to reporters outside a U.N. crime fighters' conference focused in part on preventing exploitation of children through tourism.

Germany and France sent a letter last week to the European Union demanding the right to reimpose border controls for up to a month to fight illegal immigration. (Jakarta Post)
