Australian teen dies while snorkelling at Nusa Lembongan

Authorities have confirmed an Australian teenager has died in Bali.

It is understood the 16-year-old boy drowned yesterday while snorkelling on the Indonesian resort island.

Dr Ida Bagus Putu Alit, the head of forensics at Bali's Sanglah Hospital, says the boy's body was brought to the hospital on Thursday.

He says it is believed he had been snorkelling at Nusa Lembongan, an island south-east of Bali.

"We examined the body right away yesterday. The time of death is approximately less than eight hours before examination was conducted," he said.

"We found minor injuries, some minor injuries, some cuts in his face and limbs. We also found signs of asphyxiation, so there was dilations of his pupils."

He says that an autopsy is yet to be conducted but it looks likely that the teen drowned. (ABC)
