Rare Pelegongan Dance at Hotel Tugu Bali

On August 5, 2011, the Hotel Tugu Bali on Canggu Beach will host a rare dance performance linked to Bali’s dance repertoire from the early 20th century.

A Pelegongan performance by Mekar Bhuana Conservatory of Sanur will showcase a form of gamelan choreography that was used to accompany Legong dance. It is vastly different to the contemporary, vibrant gamelan performances that are presented in most ceremonies and hotels. Pelegongan has a unique rhythm that is clear, soothing and melodic to the ear.

Wildly popular in the early 1900s, the Pelegongan performance helped lured the world’s leading artists to Bali, including Belgian painter Le Mayeur, Canadian musicologist Colin McPhee and famous painter-choreographer-writer Walter Spies. The first Pelegongan gamelan recording in Bali was made in 1928, which was organized by Spies and orchestrated by I Wayan Lotring.

With the passage of time, unfortunately, the classic Pelegongan style has been amalgamated and diluted into more modern streams of gamelan performance.

Today, the tradition of Pelegongan is kept alive by the Mekar Bhuana Conservatory. Mekar Bhuana is dedicated to preserving traditional Balinese music and dance and has re-popularized court gamelan and dance traditions through education and awareness.

The gamelans that will be used on August 5th are antiques. Incorporating an unusual order keys on the five-keyed instrument that result in a larger variety of sweeter-sounded interlocking patterns. The music produced is clear and easy on the ears.

The dances accompanying the music are no less rare. Conservatory director, Putu Evie Suyadnyani, was the last Legong Condong dancer to learn with dance maestro, Ni Ketut Reneng. She will dance Legong Jobog and tell the story of the monkey king brothers Sugriwa and Subali who fought each other for the love of a woman.

This performance is organized by Tugu Bali with the support of BRI Platinum Credit Card.

Join this is a rare opportunity to experience the aura of old Bali on August 5th, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at Hotel Tugu Bali, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu Beach
