South African surfer survives ravages of Indonesia seas

South African surfer, Brett Archipald, nearly drowned eight times, was stung by jelly fish, and almost had his eyes plucked out by seagulls while drifting off the coast of Indonesia.

Archipald went missing during a surfing trip at the Metawai Islands in Indonesia while suffering bout of sea sickness.

Details of the Cape Town man's ordeal was posted to a Facebook page started by his wife, Anita, and received a barrage of likes and comments of support.

According to a conversation posted to the page the last thing Archipald remembered was vomiting overboard and then experiencing a black-out.

“He woke up thinking someone was splashing water on his face and realised he was in the whitewash of the boat. He says he went under at least eight times but said it is NOT HIS TIME TO DIE!!! [sic]” the post stated.

After a massive search and rescue effort he was found by an Australian surf charter boat drifting 12 nautical miles east of Sipura Island.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said Archipald is currently aboard the Naga Laut boat.

Lambinon also posted onto the Facebook page saying Archipald has high praise for his rescuers on Barrenjoey and is in good spirits.

"Brett told Anita he wants to complete his surfing trip before returning home and didn't fly all that way to tread water for 27 hours."

Brett and Anita have two children, a 9-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy.

Archipald is still at sea, four hours from Padang in West Sumatra where he will be medically assessed and may be airlifted to a hospital in Singapore if needed. (News24)
