The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite has detected dozens of hot spots, identified as land fires, in concession areas belonging to companies granted industrial forest permits (HTI) in Riau.
Eight hot spots were detected in HTI areas, located in three districts in Rokan Hilir regency, which belong to PT Sumatera Riang Lestari (SRL), a subsidiary company of Asia Pacific Resources International (APRIL).
Hot spots were also detected in HTI areas in Langgadai Hulu village in Rimba Melintang district, Rokan Hilir regency and Tanjung Penyebal village in Sungai Sembilan district, Dumai City. Both areas are managed by PT Ruas Utama Jaya, a subsidiary of PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper (IKPP).
Hot spots were also identified in concession areas owned by several companies: Peputra Siak Makmur, Sakato Pratama Makmur, Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP), Mutiara Lestari, Rimba Seraya Nusantara, and Arara Abadi.
Rahidi, head of forest fire control division at the Riau administration’s forestry agency, confirmed on Sunday that dozens of hot spots were found in concession areas belonging to the HTI holders.
“It’s true that the concession areas have been ablaze,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) are working on a weather modification to end the dry season.
The effort is being carried out by three helicopters and two aircrafts. (Jakarta Post)
