Banyuwangi International Surfing Competition May 23rd to 25th 2014

Wave riders from all over the globe will showcase their skills and compete at the Banyuwangi International Surfing Competition 2014 which will take place at the Pulau Merah (Red Island) Beach in Banyuwangi Regency, in the province of East Java from 23^rd to 25^thMay 2014. 

Held for the 2^nd time following the success of its inaugural edition last year, the event will be participated by no less than 47 national surfers and 66 international surfers. Divided into three categories: Local, National, and International; the event will see the competition of surfers from 14 countries including from the U.S.A, Germany, New Zealand, Brazil, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, South Korea, Belgium, Puerto Rico, Japan, and Indonesia. 

Additionally, the Banyuwangi Surfing competition will also be highlighted with the appearance of European surfing school students who happen to conduct a research on surfing destinations in Indonesia. These fortunate young surfers have been invited by the committee to take part in the Banyuwangi International Surfing Competition 2014 and to try the challenging waves of Pulau Merah Beach in Banyuwangi.

The competition promises fantastic actions from surfers as they try to conquer the fascinating roll of waves in one of the best surfing spots in Indonesia which can get to 4 meters in height and 400 meters in length. Highlighted with a unique bulging small island off its coast, the Pulau Merah Beach presents a most picturesque setting for the competition. 

Presented by the Regional Government of Banyuwangi Regency, the event that adopted the Sport-tourism concept is expected to turn the eye of the world to Banyuwangi and its enchanting wonders. The international competition also adds to an array of annual events conducted by the regency to promote its tourism potentials that include the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival, Banyuwangi Jazz Festival, and Tour de Ijen. 

The number of tourists visiting Banyuwangi has increased significantly. In 2013, the total number of international tourists visiting Banyuwangi recorded at 10,462, increasing 90 percent from the previous year of 2012 which only recorded 5,502 international tourists. Domestic tourists also increased 24 percent from 860,831 in 2012 to 1,057,952 in 2013. This optimistic development, along with continuous efforts made by all tourism stakeholders in Banyuwangi, have decisively proven that the regency is well on its way to become one of Indonesia’s prime destinations. 

Situated at the eastern-most tip of Java, Banyuwangi is only a ferry ride away from the fabled island of Bali. There are now regular flights by Garuda Indonesia from Bali to Banyuwangi, as well as between the capital city of East Java, Surabaya and Banyuwangi.
