The Jakarta Marathon 2014, Indonesia's biggest international running event is ready to be staged on Sunday, 26th October 2014.
Entering its second edition, the Event
will offer competitions in three categories: the Full Marathon
(42.195km), a half marathon (21km), and maratoonz for kids (1.3km).
As in its inaugural edition last year,
Jakarta Marathon will take elite international runners, national
athletes, and general running enthusiasts pass some of the capital
city's most prominent landmarks such as the 17th century Old Batavia area and its many interesting renovated colonial buildings, the Fatahilah Square, the Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta's Cathedral , the National Monument (Monas), and the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout.
Governor of Jakarta (and President-elect
of Indonesia for 2014-2019 term) Joko Widodo, who was co-founder of
this event, has confirmed his attendance at the Jakarta Marathon 2014.
Fully supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, the Jakarta Marathon is aimed to establish Jakarta
as a world class tourist destination, especially in the field of Sport
Tourism. Adding to the magnetic draw of the event, the city of Jakarta
has set aside a total prize of IDR 2.4billion for the winners.
“Jakarta Marathon is the biggest Sport
Tourism event in Indonesia at recognized international standard, which
is projected to be held regularly. There will be a cultural festival to
accompany the event which will make the unique difference when compared
to other marathons in the world” said Sapta Nirwandar, Deputy Minister
of Tourism and Creative Economy, at the press conference held on Sunday,
24th August 2014.
Ndang Mawardi from Inspiro, promoters of
the Jakarta Marathon 2014 explained that the event will feature mini
shows of various art and cultural performances from all over the
Indonesian Archipelago that is a collaboration between the organizing
committee of the Jakarta Marathon 2014 with regional governments and
the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (The Indonesia in Miniature Park).
“There will be, as example, a traditional performance of Rampak Gondang,
along with a banner of Rampak Gondang together with promotions to visit
the destination from where the art originates. These performers will
play for 7 straight hours to keep up and boost the spirit of runners”
added Ndang Mawardi.
From the targeted 15,000 runners, 4,000 have already registered, including 500 runners from 31 countries such as Japan, England, France, Australia, Kenya, and Singapore.
The event is scheduled to take place from 05.00 to 12.00 hrs West
Indonesia Time. To secure the safety of this massive running fiesta,
5, 000 police and other security personnel will be deployed. Public
announcements to clear major streets and areas along the route of the
marathon will also be made prior to the event. The public will be
urged not to gather at Monas to watch the actions, but they can simply
watch at designated points along the route.
Building the hype ahead of the Jakarta Marathon 2014, the Sport Running Expo will take place at the Jakarta Convention Center from 23rd to 25th October 2014.
The sport exhibition will feature all necessary gear and accessories
perfect for running events such as shoes, jerseys, hats, watches, and
more. There will also be social activites for blood donation to the
Indonesia’s Red Cross (PMI) by Indokasih.com (Indonesia.travel)
