No damage or casualties in Bali earthquake

No damage or casualties were reported as the 6.2 magnitude quake struck Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa at 11.13 am, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Nugroho, said here on Thursday.

"The strong earthquake was experienced for three to five seconds in West Sumbawa and Bali. People ran out of their houses," Nugroho stated in a press release received here on Thursday.

He informed that the quake was centered at a depth of 10 kilometers in the sea, 286 kilometers southwest of West Sumbawa or 308 kilometers southeast of Klungkung, Bali.

No tsunami warning was issued as a result of the earthquake. Moderate shocks were also felt in East Lombok, he added.

The source of the earthquake lay in the path of the tectonic plates -- the Indian Australian Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

West Sumbawa felt a scale II intensity quake, as per Earthquake Intensity Scale Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (SIG-BMKG).

In Kuta, the intensity of the quake was felt on scale II of the SIG-BMKG, while Mataram was scale II on the SIG-BMKG.

Previously, people of Bali also felt the 4.7 earthquake on Thursday at 9:40 pm with its epicenter located at 42 kilometers southeast of Klungkung, Bali at a depth of 109 kilometers. (Antara)
