Aimed to boost promotion of the beguiling beauty of Lombok , at the same time to spread the spirit of nature conservation and preservation, the Beautiful Gili Islands Festival 2016 will take place from 5th to 7th November 2016at Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air Islands. Better known as the Three Gilis the islands are just off the northwest coast of Lombok, across Senggigi beach.

The festival will be highlighted by mass planting of 1,000 Flamboyant Trees (delonix regia) and the release of sea turtle hatchlings out to the open sea. The nature conservation campaign will attempt to break the national record of the Indonesia Museum of Records (MURI) for the largest public movement in environmental and clean up action in a tourist destination. “Through this event, we want to invite more participation from tourists as well as local inhabitants in nature conservation efforts since this plays a vital role in the sustainability of destinations in Lombok” said Mohammad Lalu Faozal, Head of the Office of Tourism of West Nusa Tenggara Province.
The 3-days' festival will also feature a Mural Fiesta, a 10K Gili Coast Trail Color Run, traditional art performances, Documentary Films screening, Reggae on the Beach Music Concert, and a whole lot more. “The event will also be highlighted with traditional rituals of North Lombok communities known as ‘Menyia’ or ‘Salting’ which represents the indigenous wisdom on the benefit of salt and salt mining,"  added Faozal.
These three small islands, fringed by magnificent white-sand beaches and swaying coconut palms, set in a turquoise sea, the Gili Islands (or simply known as “the Gilis”) came to the attention of the wider world as a backpackers' mecca in the 1980s and 1990s. But the the Gilis have now transformed themselves with high end eco-friendly lodges yet retaining its rural aura.

The waters around the islands offer some of the most amazing snorkeling and diving experiences, while on shore are no motorized transportation of any kind allowed to disturb their tranquility and refreshing ambience. Each island has its own special characteristics. Gili Trawangan is by far the most ‘cosmopolitan’ replete with bungalows, kiosks and village streets, while Gili Air has the strongest local character, amazing beaches, and lovely views on Mount Rinjani. Gili Meno on the other hand, offers pure tranquility, a perfect getaway from the bustling daily life. But, they all have one thing in common: they are incredibly hard to leave. (Source and photos:
