The World Gourmet Summit’s Annual Awards of Excellence (AOE) have been handed out since 2001 to recognize key players in the food and beverage industry across the region who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to their craft.
At the World Gourmet Summit in Singapore on April 3, 2018, this year's winners were announced. While focusing to some extent on Singapore operations, a number of regional winners from across Southeast Asia were recognized with Bali restaurants and professionals bringing honor to the Island.
In the award category for “Asian Cuisine Chef of the Year (Regional)” three Indonesian chefs won honors:
- Ragil Imam Wibowo of Nusa Gastronomy in Jakarta was the award recipient.
- Agung Gede of Kayuputi Restaurant
- Pasquo King of Sundara at Four Seasons Resort Bali Jimbaran Bay
- Mozaic Restaurant Gastronomique topped the award category.
- Locavore
- Kayuputi Restaurant at the St. Regis Bali Resort.
This is the third time that Chris Salans receives such an award but it is the first time that Indonesia has more than one candidate selected as finalists. “I am proud to see that more and more restaurants and chefs in Indonesia are making it into the finals of such prestigious regional awards. It really shows that Indonesia is rising in the ranks of the culinary discipline. This is a great sign for Indonesia and I hope it will entice more Indonesian Chefs to go into the field of fine dining that showcases Indonesian cuisine or ingredients,” said Salans.
Chris Salans is the first chef in Indonesia to have setup an independent fine dining restaurant in 2001 at the Mozaic Restaurant in Ubud, Bali. He is considered a pioneer by many of his peers and has put Bali on the world map of culinary destinations.
