Batang regency lays out plan for world-class tourism

With the government's infrastructure development projects in full swing, Batang regency in Central Java is looking to develop its tourist industry.
Using the tagline "Visit Batang 2022, Heaven of Asia", the quiet regency aims to become a world-class tourist destination.
"We are beginning to focus on tourism because Batang has a [competitive] advantage with its natural beauty," Batang Regent Wihaji recently told kompas.com.
Policies have been designed to realize the vision, with the regency set to collaborate with the youth, sports and tourism agency to develop Batang into a tourist destination.
The plans would begin with the development of key facilities, such as upscale hotels. Batang does not have any hotels that are rated three stars or higher.
"We are planning on opening a large five-star hotel, which would be connected to a mall and strategically located for tourism. Construction for it would hopefully begin in 2019," Wihaji said.
Access to priority tourist attractions in the area would also be improved, especially around Pantura, the main toll road that stretches across Java Island.
"One of the ways [to improve access] would be by [...] developing a small airport and having transportation connect to it from Pekalongan Station," Wihaji said, referring to a nearby train station in neighboring Pekalongan.

Despite having two train stations, no trains from Jakarta stop in Batang, hence the government's decision to initiate talks with state-owned railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) over opening new routes.
Wihaji said developing Jl. Pantura was crucial at a time like this, as there was potential for a large volume of vehicles to travel along it during upcoming Ramadhan celebrations.
"We are getting ready with Pantura tourist packages, and there will be a tourist festival in Pantura," Wihaji said.
Separately, Batang's Youth, Sports and Tourism Agency head, Budi Santoso, echoed Wihaji's statement.
"Right now we are creating a road map of main destinations in Batang, including Pagilaran, various beaches, waterfalls and other destinations. Investment in accommodation is already beginning to come in, with [permits for] access already submitted," Wahyu said.
The government aims to issue regulations and strengthen supporting institutions this year while developing major tourist attractions.
In 2017, Batang regency welcomed 447,000 domestic tourists. However, few foreigners visited, apart from Japanese citizens who came only to work at local coal-fired power plants. (JakartaPost)
