The fourth-most populous country in the world, Indonesia is made up of over 18,000 islands. And while there’s something to be said for the traditional tourist destinations, the truth is that the nation has much more to offer tourists than many people assume.

So it’s time to drop that lightweight wheelbarrow or hefty snowblower. Whichever season you prefer to travel and no matter what you’re looking for out of your next vacation, you’ll likely be able to find it in Indonesia.

Food and Drink

Indonesia has one of the world’s most vibrant food cultures, and you could spend weeks eating something new and exciting every day. Whether you want to try siomay, beef rendang, satay, or something entirely different, each area of Indonesia has unique dishes and flavors that can’t be found anywhere else.

The climate and natural environment in the country has also led to the production of a variety of foods, most notably bananas and coffee. Indonesia is among the world’s leaders in producing each and incorporates them into the cuisine in innovative ways. If you’re from a cooler climate, you may not even be familiar with the different types of bananas that can grow in a more tropical environment.

Natural Wonders

As an island nation, it may not surprise you that Indonesia contains some of the world’s most beautiful and pristine beaches, which is one reason it’s one of the 10 most popular tourist destinations in Asia. But it also contains a rich range of natural features, so there’s something for everyone.

Indonesia’s mountains also attract countless tourists every year who come to watch some of the most spectacular sunsets on Earth or visit one of its 150 volcanoes. The country’s highest point, Puncak Jaya, is the tallest mountain on any island in the world and a popular tourist destination for a reason.

Wildlife

Indonesia is famous for its biodiversity in both the plant and animal kingdoms, and its Komodo National Park is the only location on Earth that contains wild Komodo Dragons. These animals are the closest living relatives to dinosaurs and can be extremely dangerous, so you should always be with a park ranger if you choose to visit the area.

The nearby island of Borneo, which is politically divided into areas controlled by Indonesia as well as Malaysia and Brunei (a sovereign state located on the island’s northern edge), also contains a thriving orangutan population in some of the world’s oldest rainforests. Tanjung Puting National Park runs a rehabilitation center where you can see these animals in their natural habitat.

Indonesia has everything a tourist could ask for, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular destination. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful landscape, an abundance of flora and fauna, or amazing food and drink cultures, you’ll be able to find it in Indonesia and have the trip you’ve always dreamed of.
