The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, issued a tsunami warning late on Thursday night after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Molucca Sea in eastern Indonesia.
The warning was issued for Halmahera Island – especially its northern coast – and Ternate Island in North Maluku and Bitung in North Sulawesi.
The epicenter of the tremor was located around 137 kilometers northwest of Jailolo in North Maluku at a depth of 73 kilometers.
Residents in coastal areas in Ternate had rushed to higher grounds, witnesses told the Jakarta Globe.
The tremor was felt as far away as Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, rattling houses at 1.17 a.m. local time, a resident told Metro TV.
"We urge everyone to keep calm but people in coastal areas should evacuate to higher grounds," BMKG Ternate's acting head Hermizal told Metro TV.
"There is bigger potential for a tsunami in North Sulawesi, but people in North Maluku must also take precautions," he said.
The tsunami warning will be reassessed after one hour. At least two aftershocks have occurred after the main tremor. (JakartaGlobe)
