Death toll in West Sulawesi quake climbs to 34

The death toll following a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck West Sulawesi Province on early Friday rose to 34, as of 14:00 West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated.

"The death toll comprised 26 found in Mamuju District and eight in Majene District," Chief of the BNPB Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Raditya Jati noted in a press statement released on Friday.

The quake also compelled some 15 thousand residents to flee their homes. They are being sheltered in 10 evacuee camps in Majene District and five evacuee camps in Mamuju District, he revealed.

"Right now, power outage is still being experienced, and cellular communication networks are not stable in the two districts," he confirmed.

An earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, struck West Sulawesi on early Friday. Epicenter of the quake was located on land, six kilometers northeast of Majene, at a depth of 10 kilometers. (Antara)
