Jakarta's Alameda Spa Offers New Take on Heat-Based Massage

Located on the third floor of the JW Marriott Hotel in South Jakarta, Alameda Spa is one of the few spas in the city that offer hot sand therapy.

“We try to offer something different to the other spas. Hot sand therapy uses the same concept as hot stone therapy,” said Dwi Hartono, the Marriott’s recreation manager.

Hot stone therapy can help treat muscular aches, pains and strains by placing hot basalt stones on the body.

The placing of the stones is usually followed by a massage that can be more effective because the body is already relaxed and warmed up by the stones.

For hot sand therapy, the stones are replaced with sand.

Dwi said that the Marriott had been looking at spas in Bali for inspiration and new ideas, and that this new treatment was perfect for people who’d had a long and tiring day at the office.
