Gede and Pangrango Mountains Closed to Trekkers for August: Officials

The Gede-Pangrango Mountain Park Agency has declared the West Java mountains Gede and Pangrango will be closed to visitors during the month of August to allow the ecosytem time to rehabilitate, and to reduce the risk of fires during the dry season, an official said on Friday — the official added that a few trails will remain open.

“The temporary closure will begin to be implemented on Aug. 1 until Aug. 31,” agency chief Agus Wahyudi said in Sukabumi, West Java, according to Antara.

Agus said that the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned that rainfall levels were expected to be especially low in August, making Gede and Pangrango’s slopes prone to fire.

However, Agus said trails to the Cibeuruem waterfall and Situ Gintung lake would remain open.

“We have spread the word on the temporary closure of the mountains, and we have also posted an announcement at the three gates to the mountain's climbing paths at Cibodas, Gunung Putri and Selabintana,” Agus said.

Agus added that he hoped the decision would be respected.

The two mountains have been traditionally popular destinations for trekkers to celebrate Independence Day on August 17 each year. (Jakarta Globe)
