Three lucky winners will spend a week at Harith Wickerama’s Virgin Island Eco Villa, which he has been donated to the International Council of Tourism Partners to establish its first Green Growth Prize.
The prize will include a trip to St. John’s, a week of discussion with top environmentalists, tours in the lush Virgin Island rainforest, and organic food prepared by renowned chefs.
ICTP President Geoffrey Lipman, announcing the program, said: “We wanted to find an innovative and fun way to celebrate World Tourism Day and to encourage the global green growth movement – which is our core issue. We are very grateful to Harith for sharing our vision and allowing us to take advantage of his beautiful eco-villa. We hope that other ICTP members will join in the celebration in the years ahead, to expand the awards and more importantly to build recognition in our sector of the importance of sustainability and commitment to the green growth path.
The inaugural prizes will be given at ITB Berlin “for outstanding contribution to Green Growth and Travelism,” with the focus on “Renewable Energy,” the theme of World Tourism Day 2012.
A government, industry, and civil society prize will be awarded, selected by a jury of leading industry environmental thinkers, chaired by Maurice Strong – one of the world’s leading advocates for sustainable development and a champion of transformation in our sector.
