Betawi musical show to grace Jakarta anniversary

The Jakarta Cultural and Tourism Agency is organizing a legendary Betawi performance, Ariah, as part of the celebrations to mark Jakarta’s 486th anniversary in June, an official says.
Jakarta Cultural and Tourism Agency head Arie Budhiman said the musical show would be a new addition to the annual festivities.
“Our focus is entertaining Jakarta residents with various art, cultural performances and sports events. What will be different this year is the Betawi musical show, titled Ariah,” he told reporters at City Hall on Thursday.
The free performance will be staged at the National Monument (Monas) Park in Central Jakarta on June 29 and 30.
The musical is based on a true story about a poor girl, Ariah, who fell victim to abuse. She died while defending herself in 1870 in Ancol, North Jakarta. The story was adapted into a soap opera, Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (Sweet girl from Ancol bridge), which became a popular ghost story in the 1990s.
The celebration, which will run from June 2 to July 3, will see a range of entertaining events, including the Jakarta Great Sale, the Jakarta Fair, Car Free Night, the Abang None beauty pageant, the Jakarta 10K and the World Golf Championship.
“The peak of the event will held on June 22 at the small-medium industrial center [PIK] in East Jakarta,” he said. (Jakarta Post)
