President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is expected to officially open an Equator Carnival to be held here on August 22, to celebrate of the 70th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence.

Hundreds of decorated boats and cars will join the carnival,  Numsuan Madsun, spokesman of the West Kalimantan provincial administration, said here, Tuesday.

The carnival will start from the West Kalimantan Governor's office and finish in the Kapuas Square.

The central government has chosen Pontianak as the first region to host an activity celebrating the country's anniversary, outside Jakarta, according to him.

Pontianak has been identified as a potential maritime tourist destination by the National Development Planning Board (Bapennas), he said. (Antara)
