The Regency of Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi is in serious discussions with the Matahora Airport at Wakatobi and Indonesian air operators aimed at establishing regularly scheduled flight service connecting Bali and Wakatobi.
In recent years, the reputation of Wakatobi as a world-class dive destination has grown, resulting in stronger demand for a direct air link from Bali.
The Regency’s Secretary, Sudjiton, confirmed to NusaBali that a recommendation has been formulated for direct flights to and from Bali. The recommendation was a joint effort, prepared by the Regency, airport officials, the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Government and the Ministry of Transportation.
Currently, tourists wanting to travel to Wakatobi must transit via Makassar for a flight to Kendari to once again change to another flight to Wakatobi.
Matahora Wakatobi airport currently receives one flight each day by Wing Air from Kendari utilizing an ATR25-600/700 aircraft.
Showing the seriousness of their intent, the Wakatobi administration is offering to subsidize the profitability of the desired direct slight service from Bali to Wakatobi.
Meanwhile, plans are also afoot to extend the length of the Wakatobi Airport runway from its current 2,000 meters to 2,500 meters, and to expand the apron area to facilitate the parking of aircraft.
The Indonesian Government has identified Wakatobi as a highly potential tourism destination in Indonesia eligible for both promotional and development support funding.
