“Angklung for the World” at National University of Music Bucharest

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with National University of Music Bucharest will organize an angklung workshop on Tuesday, 16 May 2017. The workshop will be conducted by a group of angklung orchestra named “Angklung Web Institute” (AWI), who came directly from West Java, Indonesia.
Angklung is traditional musical instrument from West Java, Indonesia made from bamboo tubes. The tubes are sculpted so as to elicit various sounds when the base of the frame is held in one hand, while the other hand shakes the instrument. Each angklung produces a single note or chord, so several players must collaborate in order to play melodies. In 2010, UNESCO has recognized angklung as “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, and thus, encouraged Indonesia to safeguard, transmit, promote performances and to encourage the craftsmanship of angklung around the world.
“Angklung Web Institute”(AWI) is a music group in the Indonesian city of Bandung, who perform and also teach techniques of using and handling angklung. AWI’s vision is to familiarize angklung around the globe and make it accessible for anyone who wants to learn and collaborate angklung with other types of music. “Angklung is very versatile, easy, and fun to play. Almost any kind of music can be played by angklung, for example classical music, pop, R&B, rock, you name it”, explains Mr. Budi Supardiman, the leader of AWI. In fact, AWI has performed Romanian anthem “Deșteaptă-te, române!” at Piaţa Indonezia last Saturday which took place at the Indonesian Embassy in Bucharest.
The workshop is intended to promote Indonesian culture and familiarize angklung to the people of Bucharest. AWI will showcase some performances with angklung and angklung arumba to the audience. This performance will be followed by interactive angklung where the audience are invited to take part in the performance. Basic techniques of holding and shaking angklung will be taught by the Conductor before the audience can play a complete song together. Almost anyone can play angklung regardless of the age, gender, and musical skill.
“I hope more Romanian people be familiar with this unique instrument. It is fun to play and exudes the feeling of togetherness and team work. Angklung has been played in many countries around the world and it guarantees happiness and fun afterwards”, said H.E. Diar Nurbintoro the Indonesian Ambassador for Romania and Moldova.
The Angklung Workshop will take place at the National University of Music Bucharest on Tuesday, 16 May 2017 from 19.00 – 20.30. No invitation is needed to be part of this event. (Nineoclock.ro)
