Ancol's Pasar Seni ups its profile with eco-market, art workshops for Independence Day

Pasar Seni (Art Market) in Ancol Dreamland Park, North Jakarta, is set to hold a series of events to commemorate Indonesia's 74th Independence Day.

Starting on Aug. 17 at 10 a.m., the two-day event series called “SAKA – Merdeka Berkarya” will also kick off the market’s revitalization program.
Scheduled events open to the public include layar tancep (traditional movie screening) of the films Keluarga Cemara (Cemara's Family) and Sama Juga Bohong (Liar Liar); a creative market by Smart Dia.Lo.Gue; an eco-market by Jakarta Greener.e; a Betawi ensemble performance by Sanggar Naga Pamungkas and various art workshops.

Visitors can also enjoy music performances featuring Endah N Rhesa, Reda Gaudiamo, Iramamama, Nona Ria, DJ Uda Sjam and Irama Pantai Selatan, join a glow-in-the-dark painting class with Rurukids, marvel at the market’s parade of artists or participate in a gathering of art communities including Gardu House, Serrum and Lab Tanya.

To up its profile, Pasar Seni has various events in the pipeline for the remainder of the year, from art performances and music to film screenings and culinary fests. To support the plan, Ancol has appointed Mia Maria, the art committee head of the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) and co-curator of Singapore Biennale 2013 as the market’s director.
“Ancol’s Pasar Seni will return as a platform for art and culture development in Indonesia and serve as a meeting point for international artists and the creative education of children and families,” Mia said in a statement.

Established in 1977 by then-Jakarta governor H. Tjokropranolo, Pasar Seni welcomes artists from different genres to gather and exchange ideas. It currently has more than 100 art studios and stages. (JakartaPost)
