Hundreds of tourists reportedly tried to enter several beaches in Gunungkidul regency, Yogyakarta, during the Idul Fitri holiday.
Kompas.com reported that most of them were local tourists and travelers from other cities who came via alternative routes.
Gunungkidul area II community protection organization (Satlinmas) search and rescue secretary Surisdiyanto said these tourists had wanted to visit Indrayanti Beach, Krakal Beach and Sepanjang Beach, but the community had asked them to return home.
“We talked to them politely, [explaining] that they had to leave the beach,” said Suris, “Some begged [us to let them in, as they wanted] to enjoy the beach for a while. But, we still asked them to go home.”
Suris said that before the COVID-19 outbreak, the beaches were usually packed with visitors one day after Idul Fitri.
Gunungkidul tourism agency secretary Harry Sukmono confirmed that the tourist attractions in the area had yet to be reopened, admitting that some tourists had tried to enter the sites, especially beaches, during the holiday.
“We will tighten the security at the entrances during the holiday,” he said.
The agency has also placed staff at several posts and is working with the Gunungkidul precinct police. Those coming to visit the attractions are asked to go home as they have yet to reopen.
According to Harry, the agency had yet to decide whether it would reopen the tourist attractions next month as it was following the national police’s appeals regarding COVID-19 prevention.
Although some tourist attractions managed by state-owned organizations, such as Prambanan and Borobudur temples, will reportedly be reopened in June, the agency has yet to make a decision on reopening other attractions. (JakartaPost)
