Mount Sumbing in Central Java to reopen to hikers

Mount Sumbing in Wonosobo, Central Java, is set to reopen to visitors on Aug. 1, with the reopening of the mountain's Garung hiking trail currently in its trial phase as Mount Sumbing management adapts to the "new normal".

“We will limit the number of visitors to 250 hikers per day,” said Lilik Setiyawan, coordinator of the Mount Sumbing Management Forum, as quoted by kompas.com.

Prior to arrival, all travelers are required to obtain a hiking permit by contacting the management via WhatsApp at +6285226492745.

The mountain's base camp will be open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The "new normal" protocol for hikers of Mount Sumbing is as follows:

  • Hikers should be 17 years old or older and bring their ID cards.
  • Hikers should bring a health certificate from a health agency, hospital, community health center (Puskesmas) or clinic, issued no longer than three days before the day of hiking.
  • Each hiker should bring four masks, to be worn for a maximum of four hours each.
  • Hikers should bring their own hand sanitizer.
  • Hikers should bring their own eating and drinking equipment.
  • Tents will only accommodate 50 percent of their capacity. For example, only two people are allowed in a four-person tent. Tents must be at least 1.5 meters away from each other.
  • Hikers should always don masks in public areas and while interacting with other people.
  • Hikers should wash their hands often with soap and running water, or hand sanitizer. (JakartaPost)
