The Jakarta Statistics Indonesia (BPS) records suggest that foreign tourist arrivals are on the rise since January 2022 as the government has also started to relax international border restrictions. However, the number is still significantly below the pre-pandemic era.
“Jakarta is experiencing a spike in international arrivals in January this year with 14,089 foreign tourists,” said Jakarta BPS chief Anggoro Dwitjahyono in a press statement to Antaranews on March 2.
Compared to the same month last year, this year’s tourist visits have spiked 1,028.9 percent as January 2021 only logged 1,248 international arrivals. However, compared to December 2021, January 2022’s achievement was still down by 15.9 percent.
The spike in tourist visits, he argued, shows Indonesia’s tourism is slowly recovering from the ongoing global pandemic. Most of these international tourists came through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport while Halim Perdanakusuma Airport only logged 16 arrivals.
Broken down based on its regions, the visitors' flow is dominated by Asian tourists with 5,940 people or 42.2 percent and from the African continent with a 100.9 percent increase compared to December 2021.
Meanwhile, tourists from other regions experienced a drop; ASEAN at 10.1 percent, Asia other than ASEAN at 12.2 percent, the Middle East at 25.8 percent, Europe at 27.3 percent. Then, America (0.4 percent) and Oceania (13.7 percent).
