Festival Tektekan: Mystical Trance Ritual

For the sake of better life, Balinese people in each region hold a sacred procession to cleanse and purify the village and the community annually. This sacred ritual featuring drama and dances in Kerambitan village, Tabanan regency is called Tektekan. This mystical sacred ritual is indeed performed at Puri Anyar Kerambitan occasionally. Lucky for you who will be in Bali on October 29th – 31st 2010 as Tektekan Festival will be held at Puri Anyar Kerambitan, a residence for Tabanan Royal Family.

Tektekan actually refers to bamboo orchestra in which when struck, it produces ‘tek tek’ sound. Additionally, this bamboo orchestra accompanies the mystical trance drama and dances. The drama and dances portrays the famous Balinese story named Calonarang; the fight between the black and white magic power.

Tektekan ritual is created by A.A.Ngurah Oka Silagunadha in 1967. Traditionaly this sacred procession aims to purify the community, bring about fertility, and to drive out the evil. No wonder the mystical aura cover all the procession. On a special occasion just like to welcome privileged guests, Tabanan King often holds Tektekan to preserve the guests from bad things.
