Farewell to Ni Ketut Cenik

Paradise island of Bali has lost one of her maestro, Ni Ketut Cenik, excellent performer and teacher of Balinese dance, mother of Balinese dance maestro, I Made Jimat, and grandmother to I Nyoman Budiarta who head the world-renowned Gamelan Semara Ratih in Batuan. She died of heart faiulure on Saturday night, July 24, 2010, at the age of 88 years. “Ibu Cenik” or “Memen Jimat” as she affectionally called was born in Batuan Village, Gianyar and spent the rest of her life there. She survived 2 children, 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Ni Ketut Cenik was a talented dancer that had vibrant spirit, elegance and charm that turn locals and foreigners alike into enthusiast fans of Balinese dance. And as a teacher she was venerated by students from all parts of the globe. She was a favorite dancer of Indonesia’s former President Megawati Soekarnoputri and also her father Soekarno. Both Megawati and her brother, Guruh, were Ibu Cenik’s students. She was decorated with several national arts honors, including the Wijaya Kusuma (1982), Dharma Kusuma Madya (1986) and Dharma Kusuma (1988).

For years Ni Ketut Cenik has performed in the U.S.A., Holland, Germany, Japan and a number of other countries as an international goodwill ambassador for Balinese dance. Until the end of her life, Men Jimat remained an active performer and teacher of Balinese dance. Her burial ceremony was held on July 25th, 2010 and the date for cremation ceremony is not announced by the family.
