Batam in the Riau Islands is set a target to become a “tourism portal” for western Indonesia in 2015, the local administration says.
Batam has the potential to become a hub for tourism promotion for western Indonesian regions, Batam Mayor Ahmad Dahlan said Monday in Batam.
“After realizing the visit Batam 2010 tourism program, we’re confident we can also achieve the [tourism portal] target,” Ahmad said as quoted by Antara state news wire.
He added that his administration would continue to develop the island's tourism potential by developing its tourism facilities.
Ahmad cited a plan to commence the construction of a tourist center around Raja Haji Fisabilillah or Barelang I bridge by the end of the year. The center, he said, would have a concert area, a sports center, a historical gallery and a tourist information center, among other facilities.
“The place will be Batam’s integrated tourist center,” Ahmad said.
Batam administration has allocated Rp 3.2 billion (US$374,400) toward the tourism development project this year.
