Official Tourism Industry Certification Institutes

Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, recently in Jakarta officially launched 17 Tourism Industry Certification Institutes (Lembaga Sertifikasi Usaha LSU) that are officially authorized to issue Certificates pertaining to the tourism Industry.

The presence of these 17 Certification Institutes is expected to boost the standard and quality of services of the tourist industry, which will automatically raise national competitiveness of Indonesia’s tourism industry.

At present the Ministry has completed 24 of the 56 targeted standard competencies in the Tourism Industry, among which are those for hotels, travel services, restaurants, karaoke, restaurants, recreation parks, diving, tourist information, spa and tourism consultancy.

While four competencies that are expected to be completed this September are for villas, yachts, games and leisure sports arenas and golf. The remainder are to be completed in 2015.

It is essential that Indonesia’s tourism industry is filled with professional staff having Standard Competencies and owning Industry Certificates, said Minister Mari Pangestu, so as to raise Indonesia’s competitiveness in this global industry, especially facing next year’s ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015.

Its implementation is based on Law No. 10 of 2009 on Tourism Development which dictates that products, services and management of the tourist industry must follow approved standards.

Additionally, on Government Regulation no PP 52 of 2012 on Standard Competencies and Tourism Industries Certification, and on Ministerial Regulation no. 1 of 2014 and no. 7 of 2014 on the Certification of Tourism Industries that also regulates the establishments of Certification Institutes, implementation of Certification and their supervision. The Ministerial Regulation makes it obligatory for all sectors of the Tourism Industry to possess a Certificate for Tourism Industry in order that its management is professional, and meeting standards issued by the government.

“Such professionalism is highly important in order that the large tourism potentials available in Indonesia may be used and managed for continued sustainable development and economic growth of the nation”, said Mari Pangestu.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) competitiveness of Indonesia’s Tourist Industry has grown significantly in the past 3 years to its present position of 70 in 2013 from its former position at 74 in 2011.

While among ASEAN countries, Indonesia is in 4th position. We need to improve on this in order to be able to acquire the best benefit from the AEC 2015. “Nonetheless, it needs to be kept in mind that AEC 2015 will also bring large consequences to the life of Indonesian society including in the Tourism sector.

Competition among companies particularly in tourism and the creative economy will rise significantly and tighten, facing which, key are, among others, the implementation of standard competencies of human resources and of companies active in tourism. For this reason the existence of the Certification Institutes are strategic”. Said Minister Pangestu.
