Home to numerous breathtaking beaches, the Indonesian archipelago is no doubt a haven for surfers.
Famous as the "Disneyland of surfing", Indonesian beaches are blessed with world-class waves, according to Indonesia Wave Surfing Association (PSOI) head Arya Subyakto in Jakarta on Monday.
As quoted by, Arya said this was due to Indonesia's strategic position between two oceans.
On the western tip of Indonesia, he mentioned Simeulue Island in Aceh in the Indian Ocean as a must-visit destination. Famous for its 5-meter waves, this island is said to be a paradise worth seeking among adrenaline-hunters.
The Banyak Islands are another popular surfing spot in Aceh.
"The Mentawai Islands are also gaining popularity nowadays," said Arya.

More accessible via West Sumatra, Mentawai is home to gorgeous beaches that have even attracted Hollywood actor Liam Hemsworth.
Nias Island's Lagundri Beach in North Sumatra is also said to be among the top-10 best surfing destinations in the world. "[Other recommended spots include] Bengkulu, Lampung, Sunda Strait, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, even Morotai and Biak at the northern [part of Indonesia]," said Arya, adding Batukaras in Pangandaran, Watu Karung on Pacitan, Merah Island and Plengkung Beach (G-Land) in Banyuwangi to his list of popular Indonesian beaches among surfers.

Bali is also a favorite destination for foreign surfers, said Arya, as first-timers to Indonesia usually opt to visit the island given the easy access and sufficient accommodation.
Arya is hopeful that the government will be able to put more effort into tapping the full potential of these beaches to further boost tourism and surfing as a sport. (JakartaPost)
